The Massaroco or Pride of Madeira is Madeira’s most iconic flowering shrub, found thriving everywhere from coastal cliffs to mountain slopes across the island. This resilient perennial dazzles with minimal care as it withstands drought, salty winds, and even light frosts, making it perfect for effortless gardens, erosion control, or attracting pollinators. Its striking flower spikes create an unforgettable display for months, and unlike delicate ornamentals, it actually prefers poor, rocky soils. For gardeners seeking a low-maintenance yet showstopping Madeira native plant, this is the ultimate choice.

Planting Instructions:

  • Select a pot with drainage holes and fill it with a well-draining potting mix.
  • Sow seeds 1cm deep, spacing them 5cm apart.
  • Water thoroughly using a fine mist to avoid displacing seeds.
  • Cover with clear plastic (cling film or bag) and puncture 4-5 small holes for ventilation.
  • Place in a warm (18-22°C) location with bright light.
  • Maintain consistent moisture but avoid waterlogging - the plastic should show light condensation.
  • Once seedlings begin to grow, remove the plastic cover to prevent moisture buildup and potential rot.
