Alpinia zerumbet, often called shell ginger or cinnamon ginger, is a tropical perennial celebrated for its lush, arching foliage and showy clusters of fragrant flowers. Its blossoms open like seashells, displaying white corollas with touches of red and yellow, while its leaves release a cinnamon-like aroma when crushed. In summer, it can even produce small orange fruits resembling lanterns, adding further ornamental value.
Native to tropical Asia, it is widely grown both outdoors in mild climates and indoors in large pots. Its rhizomes can withstand -10ºC but it flowers best when kept above 5°C. With its exotic beauty, delightful fragrance and resilient nature, this plant makes a captivating addition to gardens, patios or conservatories.
