Banksia ericifolia, or Heath-leaved Banksia, grows tall and is native to sandy loam and deep sand along New South Wales' central coast. This adaptable shrub thrives in full sun or semi-shade and is frost-tolerant.
To maintain its height and bushy form, perform annual pruning or consider planting in a pot. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils, avoiding high phosphorus fertilizers. Address iron deficiency with iron chelate if planted in alkaline soils. The narrow, dark green leaves resemble pine needles that are densely packed along the branches. Flowering from autumn to early spring, it produces striking cylindrical spikes that attract nectar-feeding birds. Spent flower spikes develop woody seed cones, adding year-round interest.
