This plant can thrive in containers—for best results, choose a larger pot size. Note: Image is for demonstration.
The Musa orinoco is a hardy banana variety that thrives in Madeira’s subtropical climate and tolerates temperatures as low as -6°C. This compact plant is ideal for both gardens and large containers.
Its broad, lush leaves create a striking tropical aesthetic, while its productive nature yields clusters of 50-100 small, sweet bananas.
For optimal growth, plant in deep, nutrient-rich soil with full sun exposure. Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth in spring and summer, reducing water in winter. In cooler regions, protect the plant by cutting stems back to 30cm in autumn and applying a thick layer of mulch. The flowering process begins with an eye-catching purple flower spike, followed by bananas that ripen over 4-6 months. Each pseudostem fruits only once, but new shoots will continually emerge from the rhizome, ensuring ongoing harvests.
Rhizome without leaves and with naked roots.
